It raises many questions when gender balance, or lack thereof, runs heavily throughout differing genres, from the classical to the contemporary. Here is a number to delve into and reflect on the all-pervasive issue of underrepresented genders. In 2014, only five women (3%) featured in the list of 150 top music conductors worldwide. This was according to an “analysis of over 25,000 listings in an online global guide to classical music concerts, opera and dance performances (Bachtrack, 2015).”
