The likes of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga may be in high demand on the touring circuit. However, the gender disparity of top tour figures remains stark. The figures show 16% of the Top 200 Worldwide Tours (Pollstar) are women artists (solo or in bands). This drops further to 14% when looking at the top 100! The statistics are consistently dire over the past decade and continues to speak to the systematic issues of the music industry where representation of gender is poorest behind the scenes from the grassroots level through to exec, decision making levels. We must challenge why sales and radio play of popular artists (in particularly, the overexposure of men) and the operation of the whole music industry ecosystem is the way it is.
