Friday Figures - 21 Aug

With gigs and festivals as we know it still at a standstill, radio plays are important than ever before, given its reach, broadcasting on various platforms. All stations, and more so popular ones with an international impact, have a responsibility to pick and play gender representative acts, as we understand what this means for home-grown artists of a country or region. The Gender Disparity in UK Radio Report (by Linda Coogan Byrne and Women in CTRL) provides, “An analysis of the Top 20 Most Played British Acts across British Radio Stations in the Period of June 2019-2020 and the Top 100 Radio Airplay chart in 2020”. Though we appreciate plays of 30% gender collaborative artists in the Top 100 UK Radio Airplay, it is dispiriting that only 19% is by all-female artists, leaving a hefty 51% to solely male acts. Not quite a fair split of the share, is it?
