A preliminary report this week from University of Basel and Social Insight on ‘Gender relations in the Swiss cultural sector’ for the Swiss Arts Council shows how crucial it is to understand the country contexts, funding perspectives and cultural and societal shifts needed to tackle gender imbalance in the music industry. The barriers to economic support in this case really is bleak – of the 828 tracked funds and prizes that were allocated in Switzerland, a mere 25.8% of recipients were women. This also highlights institutional decisions made at these levels and the negative impact of underrepresentation.
