With shying away from gender inequality in the music industry no longer an option, further research has been integral to getting to the crux of the issues. Independent digital music distribution company TuneCore worked with MIDiA Research in releasing their 2021 survey ‘Be the Change: Women Making Music 2021’ which includes 401 women from artists, songwriter and producer and DJs – quantifying and pointing to their experiences of inequality and challenges. They found that gender biases and sexualisation aside, ageism topped the 3 big barriers faced by respondents. This reminds us further of the nuances of discrimination in the industry.
