Friday Figures - 4 Sept
Ofcom, UK’s communications regulator looked into diversity in the radio industry as part of their annual Diversity in Broadcasting research and monitoring programme. The report covers nearly 9,000 staff across 16 companies, with particular focus on the three big hitters of UK radio broadcasting – the BBC, Bauer and Global. Women making up 51% of the radio industry is of course, heartening and workforce representation is integral (but also being very much aware of the gaps, such as decision making positions, and ethnic minority and class representation). Thinking on also from our previous statistic, where the report in itself was a rarity, we wonder what more available, in-depth research would say, what other specific inequalities would we uncover? We understand that statistics by their very nature can not only be very limiting but appear as sparse and fragmented research – it raises the urgency for more research and studies into inequality all facets of the industry.
Further breakdowns can be found in the full report here.
