We would like to remind everyone of the variables of intersectional considerations when it comes to inclusion, and in today’s statistic, ageism. The UK Musicians’ Census 2023 from Help Musicians’, the Musicians’ Union and Women in CTRL delves into these challenges women and gender-diverse people face in building sustainable careers in music. Whilst increasing gender diversity is an obvious goal, strategising when it comes to longevity of careers and retaining women and gender-diverse individuals throughout their artistic and professional journey is crucial. Why the number of women dropping off as both artists and industry professionals have to be identified, as well as how to meaningfully combat the challenges, including (but not limited to); gender discrimination, parenthood/childcare/adult care, support for return to work, leadership etc. All these considerations continue to remind us that of the sprawling nature of identity and barriers.
