As Keychange gear up for Brussels and meeting our 2023 cohort for the first time in a few days, we thought it a good idea to spotlight some communities, collectives and organisations based in Belgium that work tirelessly for gender representation in the music ecosystem, all with an intersectional approach that we absolutely advocate for!

Find out more about them and click through below.

PSST MLLE

Psst Mlle is a Brussels-based collective looking to create new spaces in the music and cultural sector for women and gender expansiveartists to perform, as well as promoting them in the mainstream. Psst Mlle is an intersectional feminist platform deconstructing the dance floor while standing up for representation and inclusion. They also host live music sessions once a month in Brussels, as well as talks and workshops!

SHE THEY SOUNDS

Women and gender expansive music pioneers, emerging artists, sound engineers, programmers, roadies, unknowns or superstars - they are everywhere and know how to make themselves heard, but have you met them? She They Sounds connects you to the people who make up Belgium's contemporary musical landscape which also takes into consideration the diverse cultural heritage.

BRU·X·ELLES FESTIVAL

Bru•X•elles Festival is a new showcase festival based in Brussels promoting FINTA* (women and gender expansive) people in the music sector, raising awareness on gender-based violence, promoting eco-responsibility and highlighting bridges between language communities in Belgium. It features a pro-convention and a series of concerts from local and international FINTA* artists, all organised by a team of FINTA* people.

LES VOLUMINEUSES

Les Volumineuses was born out of a need to shake up the music scene and the cultural world of Brussels by highlighting women and gender expansive artists and their talents, by giving them a real voice. Les Volumineuses takes an inclusive and intersectional approach to develop music events and performing arts in key places of cultural and festive life in Brussels. This gives space and visibility to people who are subject to multiple discrimination in the sector.

SCIVIAS

Scivias is a platform that drives change for a more inclusive music sector in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Scivias works to make the inequalities visible in order to act to eradicate the systemic oppression to which women and gender expansive individuals are discriminated against, including other intersections such as social race, class, age, disability or any other existing oppression. Scivias supports and accompanies all professionals who wish to commit to a more inclusive music sector.
