Like all other areas of the music industry, there is still a long way to go in tackling gender imbalance in composition and song writing. The ‘Analysis of market trends and gaps in funding needs for the music sector’ (Publications Office of the EU) found that in Europe, “Across the participating countries’ collecting societies, women represent 20% or less of registered composers and songwriters.” The numbers speak volumes about support required, more so in areas behind the scenes that go beyond the stage.
