In their latest report, A Bitter Sweet Symphony, Parents & Carers in Performing Arts (PiPA) looks specifically at the impact of care on the classical music sector (though we wouldn’t be surprised that this is also reflected in other genres and sectors in the industry). While we know that there is a persisting gender pay gap and that it’s exacerbated by other intersections such as childcare, we find it even more stark and contentious when we put actual figures to it! We need to be reminded just exactly what this means in monetary terms, especially given global crises such as the ongoing consequence of Covid, cost of living, and the low retention figures in the industry. PiPA also put forward recommendations on how we can look to supporting care givers.
