If you want to be cynical and talk crudely about the bottom line when it comes to gender parity and intersectional opportunity in the music industry, we suggest you look at the report by Women in Music Canada in collaboration with PwC on the financial impact of diversity in leadership positions. It evidences that even the most incremental increase impacts revenue positively and significantly. There has been much talk lately of the lack of gender balance in festival line ups, despite initiatives such as Keychange and others. We are repeatedly told the myth that female acts won’t sell tickets. Hmmmmmm. We would do well to remember that festivals themselves are only one part of the interconnected wider music ecosystem and roles within it. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see how much revenue increases by just shaking up those in decision making positions, such as festival bookers, artist rosters, curators, booking agents, management etc…
