5 European Projects Working Towards a Gender Balanced Music Industry
As we approach Europe Day this weekend, we thought we would look across the continent at projects that work collaboratively on different aspects of the music industry, further highlighting what we can achieve if we pool our resources in our shared vision and goals for gender equality. Education, mentoring, documentary film, working groups and more just goes to show how broad your activities can and need to be in the industry to make an impact.
MusicaFemina stands for an artistic, multi-media platform, scientific project that is exclusively dedicated to the music creation of women. It explores all paths which make the work of women composers audible for the audience, from musicians of all sectors, teachers and learners from all school levels, to the curious and all those who take part in the musical voyages of discovery.
MEWEM EUROPA is a project to pilot and coordinate a mentoring program at European level, intended to promote the development of managerial skills of women, young professionals in the music industry. This project follows on from an experimental project, led by FELIN, VUT le LABA, in France and Germany, subsidized by the European Union within the framework of Music Moves Europe.
Future Female Sounds is a non-profit organisation, community, and booking agency founded in 2017 and based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Running local and global DJ Programmes, FFS look arrange DJ workshops, master classes, and network meetings for women and gender minorities. FFS work to provide more opportunities for both emerging and established talent in the electronic music scene.
Musique est une femme is a project and joint initiative by the TAK-Temat Aktualny Kultura/Poland, Handelsbeurs Concert Hall/Belgium, Molyvos International Music Festival/Greece, and the Cēsis Concert Hall/Latvia. The short video competition is about women composers and stereotypes about creative capabilities of women Musique est une femme which saw many inspiring submissions.
ECSA WORKING GROUP ON GENDER AND EQUALITY
The European Composer and Songwriter Alliance look to address the underrepresentation of women composers within the European community of composers and songwriters, to critically examine action points to foster the development of women music creators within its network, by establishing a Gender Working Group.
