There are not only imbalances between gender and intersections where the pay gap is concerned, but also when it comes to unpaid labour in the music industry. As we see from the UK Music’s diversity report, there is a stark difference where we see a significantly higher proportion of women and gender diverse professionals in this capacity. This also pushes us towards other questions. For example, socio-economic conditions. Irrespective of gender, who can afford to take unpaid positions? Someone from a higher socio-economic background? Someone with less financial privilege who is working other paid employment outside of this unpaid labour to fund this opportunity? Sometimes the statistics pose more questions than answers, but we think this is fruitful and crucial in order to tackle the many layers of barriers.
