With the ongoing high profile cases in the music industry, the arts sector and beyond, we remind ourselves that sexual harassment and abuse continues to be rife across the board. The numbers, whilst high, are not particularly shocking (as in the MIRA – Music Industry Research Association’s survey of musicians and composers), but reinforcing what we already knew. The trauma, job and earnings loss, the impact has a domino effect on the individual. In music, it’s not just the workplace for musicians and industry professionals but this also impacts safe spaces in venues and around it – participation in the industry both onstage and as women and gender minorities audiences and consumers. Governments, local bodies, venues etc. must work collectively for a safer nightlife for attendees of live music, clubs and generally the everyday.
