Having gone viral in 2017, the #MeToo movement was initiated by Tarana Burke, an American activist from New York, in 2006. A survivor of sexual abuse, Burke initiated the term to empower women who have suffered from sexual abuse and assault, and continued to working tirelessly to raise awareness in her commitment for social justice. As a black woman, it is also important to note that Burke focuses on marginalised communities, taking into account racial, cultural and socioeconomic contexts. What an inspiration to push the rest of us to strive for better.
