Networks in the Music Industry Working Against Abuse

As we call for accountability around gender-based violence and sexual harassment in the music industry, today we observe a handful of networks that focus on solution-based action in combating and tackling systematic abuse. With a sensitivity towards the traumas faced as a result of this, whether it is mental health or an organisation looking to find frameworks in its call for action – it is integral to ensure safe spaces and environments for all, free from abuse that exists in its many forms.  

THE SIMS FOUNDATION

The SIMS Foundation provides mental health and substance use recovery services and supports for musicians, music industry professionals, and their dependent family members. Through education, community partnerships, and accessible managed care, SIMS seeks to destigmatize and reduce mental health and substance use issues, while supporting and enhancing the wellbeing of the music community at large.

THE BIT COLLECTIVE

The BIT Collective is discusses and addresses equality issues in Scottish folk and traditional music. The collective aims to be a diverse and inclusive community of practice with the shared objective of instigating positive change. The BIT Collective believes in the need for a code of ethics protecting women in folk and traditional music from sexual harassment and assault, sending a clear zero tolerance message to male perpetrators. 

THE ROADIE CLINIC

The Roadie Clinic’s mission is to empower and heal roadies and their families by providing resources and services tailored to the struggles of the touring lifestyle. The Clinic advocates for, and empowers them to obtain, a healthy work environment while on the road. It recognises various forms of abuse that exist which touring staff can be subjected to, committing to providing safe spaces to heal. 

INCHORUS

InChorus looks to re-engineer how companies tackle harassment and build inclusive cultures. InChorus provides an End-to-End Platform to connect anonymous reporting and surveys to capture actionable data at the earliest stage and design targeted training and solutions. In doing so, InChorus encourage a more proactive approach in tackling serious incidents of harassment and bias in the workplace.  

#MUSICTOO 

#MusicToo is an anonymous French collective against gender-based and sexual violence in the music industry. Through collecting testimonies, #MusicToo intends to further pursue its set objectives in breaking the culture of silence in the music industry around abuse, allowing the opening of investigations, and support victims psychologically and/or legally, in order to find permanent solutions and change the industry.
