female:pressure
The Keychange team presented the Keychange Inspiration Award at Tallinn Music Week 2024 to honour female:pressure - the transnational database and support network for female and gender-diverse individuals in electronic arts. Founded in 1998 by Vienna-based Susanne Kirchmayr (Electric Indigo), female:pressure promotes collaboration among DJs, musicians, visual artists, agents, journalists, researchers and many more. With over 3100 members from 86 countries, this recognition underscores the community's impactful collaborations, enabling inclusivity on a global scale. Artists Sarah Martinus and Paulinhx Desbats received the award on behalf of the network, in addition to Paula Hakkaja (aka Freya Algiz, Keychange Alumni) of the Estonian chapter of female:pressure. Their impactful FACTS report was released in March this year.
female:pressure is a transnational online database and network of women, AFAB, transgender, transfeminine, transmasculine, intersex [+gender optional], genderqueer, gender nonconforming, a-gender and/or non-binary DJs, musicians, composers, producers, visual artists, agents, journalists and researchers working in the realms of electronic music and visual arts. It is a publicly accessible source of information, a means of communication and a tool to disclose the existence and the work of women, non-binary, transgender and gender fluid people in this seemingly cis-male dominated field.
The female:pressure project is continuously growing and advancing, practicing an intersectional and anti-racist approach to their work and try to listen to and learn from each other on the female:pressure mailing list.
“Thank you so much for this recognition of our work! I see female:pressure primarily as a playful set of tools that all members and all interested parties are invited to use. female:pressure would be nothing without individual members taking initiative and coming up with something that makes the community prosper and collaborate.
Receiving this Keychange Inspiration Award enables us to shed light on some of the longer term and often invisible, infrastructural aspects of developing online spaces and projects which promote greater inclusivity. May this award go to each of our members who make female:pressure a diverse spanning network, especially to those who have given a voice to their intersectional experiences, volunteered within our research groups; notably the latest FACTS report from 2024.
I could not be happier to see Sarah and Paulinhx, part of our Berlin Community, represent our network at Tallinn Music week. Thank you”
