Mari Kalkun

Mari Kalkun is a musician, singer and songwriter who creates deep-rooted personal music channelled by her warm voice and atmospheric compositions. Mari's songs are inspired by contemporary poetry, nature and life itself. She has the ability to create a spontaneous mood at her concerts where improvisation plays a big role. Fortunately, no language skill is necessary to be affected - Mari Kalkun’s approach towards music is very personal and with every song she tells a story. Strongly relying on her Southern Estonian roots, traditional lullabies become reflections of our restless world and contemporary poems mingle with rare, even extinct local languages. She accompanies herself with unique traditional Estonian zither (kannel) bringing it to 21st Century with playful ease. Her first solo album “Üü tulõk” (´Arrival of the Night´ 2007) gained remarkable recognition among Estonian music audience and critics. Altogether Kalkun has released four albums, two of them solo and two with bands. She received Estonian Ethno Music Award 2013 as the Best Singer and in 2015 her band Mari Kalkun & Runorun album "Tii ilo" was nomineed for the Best ethno album both in Finnish and Estonian music awards.
