Friday Figures - 9 June
The report, “Inclusion in the Recording Studio?” is the third annual report on the music industry from Professor Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. Funded by Spotify, it examines gender and race/ethnicity of artists and content creators across 800 popular songs on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Charts from 2012 to 2019. It showed that 8 out of 1,093 producing credits went to women of colour. This is a stark reminder of how much work needs to be done behind the scenes, simultaneously highlighting the inequalities beyond the fight for gender balance that also urgently need to be addressed in the music industry.
