To mark France’s Equal Pay Day on 3rd November this month, feminist newsletter Les Glorieuses calculated that when considering the current pay gap, women were now working for free from that morning until the end of the year (France 24 article). In the UK, this is 18th November (calculated by The Fawcett Society). The ONS reported that the gender pay gap among all employees in the UK was 15.4%, up from 14.9% in April 2020. In addition to gender on a national and international geographic and politic level, intersectional elements must also be considered, for example, the increased impact on women of colour. And, of course, these figures further highlight the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on women.
